THREE years have passed since we last heard from Nadhira Nisha Shamsuri, better known as Nadhira.

Malay Mail Afternoon caught up with the singer who grew up between Kuala Lumpur, Brunei, Indonesia and London.

She explained the value of being an English recording artiste here, or lack of it.

“It’s not worth it,” says Nadhira, who is now based in Kuala Lumpur.

Even an Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) nomination for Fire featuring David Cook doesn’t drive any ambition.

“It’s a great feeling, the recognition. But that’s all. You don’t get more money or more jobs. It’s just something to say ‘Hey, I got a nomination’,” she said.

The R&B pop artiste is now recording new songs with local artistes and has an EP set to launch this year.

“It’s a comeback for me, definitely. I’ve been laying low for a while.

“I’ve been writing a lot lately and I’m ready to show people I’ve grown as a person and a writer,” Nadhira said.

Nadhira made her mark on the urban music scene with From Malaysia With Love in 2010, followed by album 12 Shades.

The album included chillout track XXL and single Tear Us Apart featuring Ron E. Jones, which chalked up over half a million hits on YouTube.

Now she is broadening her horizons, hoping to attract listeners in Malaysia and beyond.

“I’m working with foreign producers and looking to collaborate with artistes from different countries,” she said.

“Right now I’m targeting the US where my producer Fly Go is from.”

Nadhira recently recorded two tracks. She paired up with emerging Kuantan rapper B-Heart for one of her songs, Peluang, her third track recorded in Bahasa Malaysia.

A fallout with her previous management has given her renewed perspective on recording music.

“I’m quite edgy as an artist but people might say I’m soft when you meet me.

“My music is on the edge,” she said.

For Nadhira, music is a platform to express herself.

“I feel like people want to hear more from me, they’re just waiting,” said Nadhira.
