Modelling a music dream
By Jordan Barnes

HAVING sung in bars and at open mics in Melbourne for a spell, Sasha Nichole has found her way back to Malaysia. Half-American, half-Malaysian, the 26-year-old:

Released her first single Selama Lamanya with rapper Altimet on Paranormal Records this week.

Plans to return to Malaysia for good to pursue music.

Her path to recording artiste was more interesting than most.

Studied journalism at Swinburne University before taking up freelancing modelling.

Became an Instagram influencer, sharing shots from various boutiques and sexy bikini selfies from the golden beaches of Australia.

Will the 16,000-strong Instagram following help with her music career?

“My followers have always embraced (my voice). Now I’m getting a lot of ‘Wow!’ comments because they’ve never heard me speak BM.”

Living on-off in Malaysia over the years, Sasha was based here between the ages of 12 and 14 when she attended Sri Inai International School, Petaling Jaya.

Said the transition from modelling to singing will see her music scrutinised even more closely. “Everyone can criticise you (on social media). I have to be strong and block it out.”

But with Altimet in her corner for a catchy debut single, some might say it’s not a bad start. “I didn’t believe them when they told me Altimet was interested. I was telling people ‘I think Altimet is going to feature’ and they were like ‘Yeah, right!’”

Who produced the track?

Lion Music Group producer Bryan B, who produced De Fam’s Supergirls in 2015. He wrote the song and the demo was passed around, eventually finding its way to Altimet who immediately got on board.

The plan?

Newcomer plans to return to Malaysia depending on the reception of the single. An Aidilfitri cover tune is expected in June and she has already returned to the studio to record with up-and-coming hip-hop singer Raja Syahiran.

The dream?

“I’d like to put Malaysia on the map and being half-American I’d love to cross over a little bit. That would be sick.”
